We celebrated Emma's birthday yesterday. The day started out rainy but, the sun burst through and she had another beautiful day to celebrate. She built a sweatlodge to mark her 20th birthday. Alot of time was taken to find just the right rocks for the firehole. They needed to be able to withstand being heated and having watered poured over them without exploding. Igneous rocks were best. Sandstone and riverstone rocks would crack beacause of too much water. Next small saplings were cut and placed in the four directions with the door facing eastward. Pine boughs were placed over the top to create a nest and for their beautiful scent when the lodge is being heated. Red ties were placed on all the poles for spirit. The coverings used were canvas, followed by a layer of blankets and finally a covering of a tarp to keep the steam in. Throughout the day Maude the dog stood guard over all the activities.
