My husband is a romantic. He brings me flowers at least once a week and in the summer time its more. Sometimes he buys them at a shop, or a truck on the side of the road. In the wintertime, that is what he must resort to. But, for a romantic such as he...he much prefers picking wildflowers when he can or picking them in our garden or in a customers garden if he asks. He is most excited when he comes home dragging a big white bucket with a clump of Iris or some other plant that someone is dividing and looking for its new home. He is a plant rescuer of the finest kind. It is wintertime, although so very warm this winter...and for Valentines Day he brought me pink roses. He always seems like a boy coming to his sweetheart for the first time when he brings me flowers...it's one of the things I most love about him.
I am cleaning out drawers and cupboards in preparation for the new kitchen that is slowly taking shape here. I was digging and found this box. It was an old Valentine Box that emma saved all these years. In the box are all the candles for all the birthday cakes that we have ever had here in this house! I knew they were there. Between emma and I, one of us gets a fistful of candles into that box after a party because we cannot bare to part with them. It's as if we can save up all of the wishes from all of the years and keep them safe and sound tucked inside that box. I was alone when I found it and it brought such a smile and then happy and some sad tears. Happy for all of the love. Some sadness at noticing the years going by...
And...then I found these....
These are the candles from Emma's very first birthday cake...and the next two years to follow. A mama's heart leaps when she can hold in her very hands and put to her own lips...the whisper of baby breath on those sweet wee candles from 24 years ago...somewhere around here is the little silver candle holder from a waldorf fair that we bought for that very first candle to go into.
Do you remember all those years you've travelled...? Have any of your wishes come true...?
oh, the human memory....what a treasure it is to find those "first candles". the years fly by, don't they?

oh yes..... we have candles too :) I've saved each of the kids first birthday ones...
on another note, are you doing unravelling? photo meditations? my mama gifted me with both this spring.... hoping you'll be in one too :)
