Garden Blooming

Strawberries, roses, marigolds....


Last year, I missed a lot of gardening due to a back that is not cooperating.  So, my dear made me a couple of surprises.  Two large raised beds!  They are made from recycled pine flooring that we had around.  They are the perfect height for my short self.  The white on the boards just needs to be wiped off.  I have stuffed the beds with plants! Veggies, herbs, flowers...maybe 50 plants in each box.  It's going to be grand!

Carrot Sesame Ginger Cookies from Wholefoodkitchen. 

These cookies turned out very good!  I brought them to a gathering in Willimantic last night.  Everyone said they liked them ...and the whole pile was polished off!

So...today I made another batch for the unfortunate circumstance of  humans not being at the gathering and therefore not having their fill of cookies!  The cookie jar is now full and the humans here are happy once again.  I need to master taking indoor photos in low lighting...and perhaps add a new lens to my wish list.


Just because...

The Mansfield Library had their booksale today...I seemed to have filled up a couple of boxes of books to drag home with me.  I was excited to have found a few Adrienne Rich poetry books.  Also scored May Sarton, Marge Piercy, Annie Dillard...well, there they are, you can see them.  I already own copies of some of these and plan to give them away as gifts.  I seriously need a book house.  I have it all planned out in my head.  Wall to wall books, a woodstove and a chair...and a blanket.

A gift from my husband...a birthday wish for me.

A new pantry shelf made for me for my birthday.  I'll fill it up with grains, beans, herbs...all those good things that nourish our bodies!

I already had a shelf that held 15 jars quite nicely.  Inspired by Heather over at Wholefoodkitchen...we decided a nice big shelf would be wonderful.  This will work until the someday pantry is built.  That someday pantry will also do double duty as cold storage for the winters.  This is the panty in the new kitchen that is slowly coming together.

Dried roses in an old blue fiesta vase that emma found at the flea market a couple of years ago.  I love old dried flowers.  I like to watch them shrivel up and fade away.  Often I tie them into a bunch and hang then up somewhere...

My husband is a romantic.  He brings me flowers at least once a week and in the summer time its more.  Sometimes he buys them at a shop, or a truck on the side of the road.  In the wintertime, that is what he must resort to.  But, for a romantic such as he...he much prefers picking wildflowers when he can or picking them in our garden or in a customers garden if he asks.  He is most excited when he comes home dragging a big white bucket with a clump of Iris or some other plant that someone is dividing and looking for its new home.  He is a plant rescuer of the finest kind.  It is wintertime, although so very warm this winter...and for Valentines Day he brought me pink roses.  He always seems like a boy coming to his sweetheart for the first time when he brings me flowers...it's one of the things I most love about him.

I am cleaning out drawers and cupboards in preparation for the new kitchen that is slowly taking shape here.  I was digging and found this box.  It was an old Valentine Box that emma saved all these years.  In the box are all the  candles for all the birthday cakes that we have ever had here in this house!  I knew they were there.  Between emma and I, one of us gets a fistful of candles into that box after a party because we cannot bare to part with them.  It's as if we can save up all of the wishes from all of the years and keep them safe and sound tucked inside that box.  I was alone when I found it and it brought such a smile and then happy and some sad tears.  Happy for all of the love.  Some sadness at noticing the years going by...

And...then I found these....

These are the candles from Emma's very first birthday cake...and the next two years to follow.  A mama's heart leaps when she can hold in her very hands and put to her own lips...the whisper of baby breath on those sweet wee candles from 24 years ago...somewhere around here is the little silver candle holder from a waldorf fair that we bought for that very first candle to go into.

Snow is predicted for tomorrow.  I'm not complaining.  We haven't had any snow whatsoever this winter yet...snow will be pretty to shuffle through.  I got a little lost here today...thanks to Holly on Decor8.  It's been a year since I took her BloggingYourWay e- course.  If you want fresh ideas for your blog I highly recommend it.
