New England Fiddle Contest
Our first CSA pickup from Birdsong Farm. Bruce has a limited number of us that he packs things up for on the day before his market in Coventry. It was nice to get to talk with the farmers. We checked out the coldhouse that my husband built for his farm. He says its working nicely and making his life alot easier for packing up and preparing for markets and keeping foods fresh. What a beautiful bounty. We have several varieties of lettuce, bok choy, scallions, snap peas, swiss chard, broccoli raab, eggs...
The New England Fiddle Contest is happening tomorrow. Paul Lemay who founded the festival died this year. I got to talk with him in the early years...he was inspiring, motivated, down to earth and a dreamer...we need more dreamers...and doers. I've been going to this festival since the first one! Back in the day it was a huge event that happened in Bushnell Park with thousands of folks attending and having a big 'ole huge fiddle fest party. It's alot smaller now but, somehow it seems with the turn of the world enjoying simpler times that perhaps people will start to learn to make more of their own music. Music is a daily part of our lives and it wouldn't be the same without it. So, I'm excited that the fiddle festival is happening and I can go and sit among the footstomping sounds that I'm striving to find once again.
Here's my fiddle. She is an Amati copy. I'm not sure how old it is but, I've had the fiddle for 35 years and it's older than that. I've been playing about an hour a day. I just got my book and will be going through that for information and inspiration.
So, I'm gearing up to learn to play Appalachian Mountain Fiddle. I found this great band for some inspiration. Imagine yourself at a local barn dance, a pretty dress on, those hard soled dancing shoes that can pound away in a balance-and-swing...or just sit back and tap your toes to the soul satisfying tune! I'm going to put videos on here for me to look back on for musical inspiration. I'm still waiting for my book to arrive to begin joining in the Fiddlers Summer. I dragged out my fiddle today and was scratching away it...sweet, sweet feeling...
