So, alot of things have been falling into our laps lately. We needed a new kitchen sink because the one we have is old, leaking, and the faucet doesn't fit anymore due to wear and tear. What does a carpenter's wife do when she needs something? She says..."let's go to the Recycled building supply store!" We walked in...straight back to the sinks. All manner or sinks were to be found. There were stainless steel sinks, huge slop sinks, small porcelain bathroom sinks, metal sinks with dents in them. We found a sink alright! We found a porcelain, double bowled, single faucet white sink.
Now, you need to imagine that I've lived here for 25 years now. I am the wife of a carpenter. I have never had a finished kitchen. YOU might not know this if you walked into my kitchen. Our kitchen has consisted of old cupboards used for food storage, plywood frames to support a counter, an old farm table in the center for an island, an old cupboard we made into a spice cupboard, curtains that draw across the front of the plywood. We have painted shelves that the carpenter that this woman is married to built...just temporary. I have loved the way we fixed it up with just, "making do".
Well, back to my original story. We walked back out of the sink area and up front to pay for the $20 sink...looked to our right...and lo and behold a ST Charles Blue Metal Retro Kitchen cabinet set was standing there. The kitchen is now sitting in a heap in the middle of my "Old" kitchen and we are the happy owners of a cheap, robins egg blue, high end retro metal kitchen cabinet set. Granted I've waited for a long while for a kitchen that might function a bit better and way easier to clean...despite the cheap cost of this kitchen...I stood there hemming and hawing over it. So, the Uhaul pulled into the driveway and an assembly line formed and the St Charles made it safe and sound to its new home. Recycled, Reused, Repurposed, Reinvented, Rehomed...the wife of a carpenter is happy. The carpenter is happy...I think because maybe the conversation that begins with..."So, what sort of kitchen do you want to build...?", has ended...for now at least!
The photos are not going to do it justice as it's stuffed in the kitchen and its early morning and the light doesn't hit it just right. Nevertheless, here it is...
It has things like a breadbox, flour or grain boxes, linen drawers, huge spice cupboard, undersink cabinet, food cupboard/pantry, oven holder, drawers everywhere, a silverware/utensil drawer. I have never had such convenience. I know, I know...alot of folks in the US take this for granted. Even the kitchen that we have now is pure luxury compared to what lots of folks in the world have. But, reflecting on it all now...becasue I'm a Pisces...and a Pisces creature reflects, if nothing else...I have been irritated over the years for the struggle of space in an already small home. But, underneath it all I've always been proud for not buying things and have always made do for the most part...of course always with a little help from our friends.
a pile of cabinets
linen drawers!
spice cabinet, door opens and more storage in back!
See the more storage in back?
large food cupboard
drawers everywhere
apparently there is lighting for under the cabinets! What?! You mean late at night wandering around we will no longer have to wear our ever present headlamps? Really?
two large grain/flour bins! Not sure how we'll use these as this place can get a little Anne of Green Gables from time to time with Mice roaming the premises in the winter!
A bread box?! No sir! We throw our bread on top of the fridge in a basket.
a couple of cabinet doors...to show you the color a little better.
Thanks so much for indulging my new/old kitchen photos. It's going to be crazier than usual around here.
